During the
50's and 60's,
modest, two and three-story
apartment buildings (many in the "ding
bat" style) were built in large numbers
to accommodate the massive migration to
Los Angeles. It was the convention to
give a name to the building which, along
with its street number, was placed in a
conspicuous place on the building's
facade. As time went on, the names got
more fanciful and both names and numbers
vied for attention through the use of
eye-catching fonts and colors.
I've
scoured the entirety of Hollywood,
documenting this historical signage.
From my extensive collection of these
images, here's a selection of those
apartment buildings of early Hollywood;
"they had faces" which proudly
proclaimed their unique name and number. |
